Radcliffe, Fry Donate Glasses to Holocaust Memorial Event

Actor Dan Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and UK Harry Potter audio book narrator Stephen Fry have donated their glasses to a project being held as part of Holocaust Memorial Day in the UK. This is North Scotland reports that they donated their eye wear for an exhibit that reflects this striking photo of discarded glasses taken from the victims of the concentration camps in World War II. Upon making his donation Dan wrote “Please find enclosed my first pair of glasses which I wore at school at six. I wish you every success with the exhibition.”
These glasses are part of the Respectacles Project and will be on display in Liverpool, England January 21 to 26, with the glasses later being donated to the Vision Aid Overseas charity. Also in Liverpool, England there will be a special Holocaust memorial event held at the Philharmonic January 27, which will be lead by actor Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy).
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling attended the British Comedy Awards last night in London, England. Online reports say that Jo presented actor Stephen Fry (narrator of the UK Harry Potter audio books) with a lifetime achievement award. Host Jonathan Ross also joked with our favorite author when he “cheekily asked her to sign a book for him, not one of her own Harry Potter ones but a tome by rival kiddie author Philip Pullman! She gamely played along.” The Daily Mail has a good photo of Jo at this event.
JKR to Read from “Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows” in New York, Will Sign Books and Answer Questions about Harry Potter Series

Previously we told you about the Open Book Tour author J.K. Rowling would be undertaking this fall here in the United States, making three appearances for school children only at schools in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and New York City. She will also be appearing at Carnegie Hall in New York on Friday October 19 at 7pm, and as a reminder, tickets for this stop are available to the public via a special sweepstakes which will close in one week on August 31.
Scholastic has now updated with information that Jo will be reading from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at the event in NYC, and ” will answer questions about the entire series. Following the reading and Q & A, Ms. Rowling will be signing books for audience members. In order to make sure that she is able to sign a book for everybody, she will only sign one book per person. Each person will receive a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but, if an audience member chooses to bring a favorite copy of any book in the series, Ms. Rowling will sign that instead.”

Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint Join Emma Watson as British National Movie Award Nominees

Following on the news that we first told you several days ago, actors Dan Radcliffe and Rupert Grint are also joining fellow Harry Potter actress Emma Watson as nominees at the inaugural British National Movie Awards. The Metro reports that Dan Radcliffe is nominated for his role as Harry Potter, and Rupert Grint is nominated for his performance as Ron Weasley both in the category of “Best male performance” in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which is also nominated as “Best Family Film.”
Winners are chosen by the public and voting is now open for these awards, which you can do so via this link. These awards will be presented at London’s Royal Festival Hall, and broadcast on September 29 on ITV. There will be a limited amount of tickets available to the public for this event, which will go on sale starting August 21. To purchase, you must call the box office in the U.K. at 0871 663 2538.
Fans begin to line up at Borders in Mission Viejo, CA

According to CNNMoney, the first Harry Potter fans have begun to line-up at Borders bookstore in Mission Viejo, CA. A group of seven teenagers arrived at the store today at 10:00 a.m. PT and are eagerly awaiting the midnight release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on Saturday, July 21, 12:01 a.m.
Borders is hosting a free “Grand Hallows Ball” at stores nationwide to celebrate the release of the final book. Beginning at 9:30 p.m., the “Grand Hallows Ball” events will transport guests from their ordinary muggle world into an evening of enchanting music, imaginative costumes, fun activities, and fabulous prizes. Each store will introduce a headmistress or headmaster of ceremonies to host the evening’s schedule of events and encourage guests to participate in-among many other activities-The Potter spelling bee, the Great Snape Debate, and the crowning of a king and queen of the Ball. In addition, a wide range of prizes will be given out throughout the evening, including a chance to win the first place in line at midnight, when the book goes on sale.
