J. K. Rowling Discusses Inspiration for Minister of Magic and More in New Interview
Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling is the subject of an interview which ran this past weekend in a number of Spanish language publications as part of the XLSemanal section. This interview first took place a number of months ago and features Jo speaking of her inspirations for events and characters which played heavily in the Harry Potter series, a little about her past, and candidly about her husband, Dr. Neil Murray. We are still awaiting the entire interview and will provide more here when we can. In the meantime, here are some rough excerpts from the interview which appeared over the weekend:
About the relationship between September 11, 2001 and Harry Potter, Rowling denied any influence and recognizes the true inspiration for Minister Cornelius Fudge: “My model of the world after Voldemort’s return was, directly, the government of Neville Chamberlain in Great Britain during the Second World War, when he tried to minimize the menace of the Nazi regime for political convenience.”
She also spoke about her two marriages, saying: “I had decided not to marry again. In seven years I hadn’t met anyone who liked me so much. And I remember that I thought: I have a daughter who I adore, I have success, and deep down, I am happy. My sister introduced us and I thought he was a very solid person. He’s an excellent doctor in his profession, and he works in a world that is far away from mine. What I most adore about him is that, everyday, Neil knows more people that want to know if he can help them, without having to ask who he is married to.”
She didn’t avoid talking about her first husband, Jorge Arantes, who Jo was married to for nearly two years: “None of the characters of my books are based on my ex. Whatever happened in our marriage, the truth is that my ex-husband contributed fifty percent to one of the most beautiful things that has happened in my life, which is my eldest daughter. So, I’d never used him in a fairy tale. He’s her father.”
J.K. Rowling Named Overall Great Briton of 2007
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has been named the Morgan Stanley Overall Great Briton of 2007 as well as the winner of the Great Briton, Arts category. These awards recognize those who “contributed exceptional achievements to their field this year in a distinctly British way”. Jo had been shortlisted in the Arts category along with actor Sir Ian McKellen and artist Damien Hirst. Naming Jo for both honors, The Telegraph reports:
A publishing phenomenon, JK Rowling has changed reading habits and patterns worldwide. The success of the Harry Potter books – the final novel in the series sold 11 million copies in its first 24 hours – has united a generation of children and parents in a genuine love of reading.
The judges felt Miss Rowling had transformed the world’s view of Britain and that her books are “brilliantly British”. That she also managed to top the best-seller list in France with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the first English-language author to do so, is a further testament to her global appeal. Rowling has left an indelible mark on the nation’s literary history, which is why the judges insisted that she should receive double honours, winning the arts category and be named the Morgan Stanley Overall Great Briton of 2007.
The Scotsman reports Jo was unable to attend the awards ceremony, and “accepted the award by video from her home in Edinburgh, described 2007 as “a very bittersweet year for me” but said she was “thrilled and honoured” to receive the prize.”
“Deathly Hallows” Director Update: Heyman says Del Toro Not Really in the Running
As reported previously, director Guillermo Del Toro has repeatedly expressed an interest in directing the final Harry Potter film, however today Potter producer David Heyman says this will not be the case. Empire magazine reports that they recently spoke with Mr. Heyman who “that Del Toro was sadly not really in the running because “he’s rather busy.” The Hollywood Reporter has an article today stating that Mr. Del Toro is in talks to helm the widely anticipated The Hobbit films (with Peter Jackson producing), and this would not permit enough time for Guillermo Del Toro to take on the Harry Potter film as well. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is due in movie theaters sometime in 2010.
